Often recommended as introductory mountains among the Adirondack Forty-Six, Cascade and Porter Mountains offer a rewarding yet approachable hike, perfectly suited for those new to the High Peaks or for those seeking a memorable outdoor adventure with friends or family. These two peaks, recently rerouted with a new trail, are still considered among the most accessible and popular in the region, providing breathtaking vistas and an immersive wilderness experience.

Special Considerations:
This guide describes an unconventional approach to Cascade and Porter Mountains. In 2018, the NYSDEC initiated plans to develop a new trail originating from the Mount Van Hoevenberg Recreation Center (MVHC). As of this guide's publication in May 2024, the completion status of this trail remains uncertain, with opening projected sometime during 2024–2025. For current trail conditions, please consult the NYSDEC website. Once the new trail officially opens, the old route will be closed, and parking there will become limited. Signage will be placed to guide hikers, and the old trail will eventually undergo deconstruction.
Water Availability:
Limited; hikers should carry maximum water, as few streams are available
Maximum Grade:
Approximately 500 feet over 0.7 miles, leading to Porter col
Sunrise or Sunset:
Amazing for both.
View Type:
360 degree panoramic views on both summits
