Planning & Informing Others
Planning ahead is crucial for a safe and enjoyable hiking experience in the Adirondack High Peaks. Proper preparation, awareness of trail conditions and weather, and having an emergency plan can make all the difference in ensuring a successful trip.

Trip Planning & Preparation
-
Use Reliable Resources – Gather information from maps, guidebooks, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) website to plan your hike.
-
Inform Someone of Your Plans – Leave details of your itinerary with a family member or friend, including your route, expected return time, and any alternate plans. If plans change, notify them as soon as possible.
-
Choose Trails Within Your Ability – Be realistic about fitness and skill level and select a trail that matches your experience. The Adirondacks have a wide range of trails, from moderate day hikes to challenging high-elevation summits.
-
Check Weather & Trail Conditions – Always review multiple sources for weather forecasts and current conditions before heading out. Sudden storms, temperature drops, and high winds are common in the mountains.

On the Trail: Best Practices

-
Stay Hydrated & Take Breaks – Drink plenty of water, eat snacks for energy, and pace your hike according to the slowest member of your group.
-
Monitor Weather Changes – If a thunderstorm occurs, avoid open areas, summits, and water sources. Descend to lower ground if necessary.
-
Hike in a Group & Stay Together – One of the most common mistakes is splitting up. Stick together and keep communication open.
-
Track Time & Be Aware of Sunset – Start hikes early and keep an eye on the time and daylight hours to ensure a safe return before dark.
-
Trailhead & Parking Lot Security – Lock your vehicle, conceal valuables, and always sign in at the trail register.
Emergency Preparedness
Do not rely on your phone as a primary safety tool—carry a headlamp and paper map as backups.

What to Do if Lost or Injured

-
Stay Calm & Assess the Situation – Panic leads to poor decision-making. Stop, think, observe, and plan.
-
Call for Help – If you have cell service, call DEC Dispatch at 1-833-NYS-RANGERS (1-833-697-7264) or 911. If no service is available, try moving to higher ground to get a signal.
-
Make Yourself Visible – If unable to move, find an open location where searchers can see you. Use bright clothing, a whistle, or a reflective item to attract attention.
-
Prepare for Survival – If stranded overnight or in poor conditions, build a shelter, conserve energy, and stay warm.
